Gather Round: Our New Nomadic Tipi is Coming This Spring!

Can you smell that? No, it’s not just the fresh Iowa mud (though there is plenty of that to go around right now!). It’s the scent of SPRING. Here at Sunset Hills Bison Ranch and Lodging, spring doesn't just mean we’re checking the pastures for new wobbly-legged calves, though, believe me, that is the highlight of my entire year. It also means we are finally pulling the curtain back on a project we have been dreaming about for a long, long time.
I am so incredibly excited to announce that we have a brand new addition joining the ranch family this season: our very own Nomadic Tipi!
Quick note before we go any further: the images you’re seeing in this post are CONCEPTUAL/REPRESENTATIVE (aka “vibe photos” to show what we’re aiming for). As soon as our actual tipi site is officially up and running for Spring 2026, I’ll be sharing the real-deal photos—promise.
Now, before you go thinking I’ve lost my mind and decided to live in a tent full-time (don’t tempt me, some days the ranch house is way too loud!), I want to give you the full scoop on what this tipi is, what it isn't, and why I think it’s going to be your new favorite spot on the property.
Something Old, Something New, and Something Very "Boho"
If you’ve spent any time looking for unique stays or glamping near me, you know that people are getting really creative with where they put their heads at night. We’ve already got our gorgeous cabin rental and our fan-favorite Conestoga wagons, but we felt like something was missing. We needed a place for everyone to come together.
That’s where the tipi comes in.
We wanted to create a space that felt ancient and grounded, but with a total "boho-meets-bison" aesthetic. Think heavy canvas, sturdy poles reaching for the Iowa sky, and an interior that makes you want to kick off your boots and stay a while. It’s rustic. It’s cozy. It’s a little bit magical.

The Big "Disclaimer" (I know, I know!)
Okay, I have to put on my "Owner/Operator" hat for a second and be super clear about one thing because I don't want anyone showing up with their pajamas and a toothbrush expecting a hotel room.
This tipi is NOT a lodging unit.
I’ll say it again for the folks in the back: it’s not for sleeping! We aren't putting beds in here. There is no electricity (GASP!). There is no air conditioning, and there is no heater. If you’re looking for a place to plug in your phone and watch Netflix, this ain't it, sis.
What it IS, however, is the ultimate unplugged community hub. We wanted a space where all of our guests, whether you’re staying in the cabin, the wagons, or just visiting for an event, can gather. It’s a dedicated firepit space. It’s a place to swap stories, share a drink, and actually look at each other instead of a screen. In a world that is CONSTANTLY buzzing, we wanted to give you a place that is intentionally quiet.
Why a Tipi? (Our Philosophy in Action)
You guys know our core philosophy here at the ranch: Care for the Animals. Care for the Land. Care for You.
Adding this tipi wasn't just about having a cool photo op (though, let’s be real, it’s going to be STUNNING). It was about that third pillar: Care for You. We realize that most of the people who come out to see the bison in Iowa are looking for an escape. Life is fast, loud, and honestly, pretty exhausting sometimes.
When you sit inside a tipi, something weird happens to your brain. The circular shape, the way the light filters through the canvas... it just forces you to slow down. It’s an intentional way to care for your soul. By providing a communal space that doesn't have the distractions of modern life, we’re inviting you to reconnect, with nature, with your family, and maybe even with that couple staying in the wagon next door.

What to Expect Inside
Even though there aren't beds, don't think for a second that it won't be comfortable. We are going ALL OUT on the vibes. I’m talking floor cushions, cozy rugs, and that perfectly curated rustic decor that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a different century (but with better snacks).
The centerpiece, of course, is the gathering area. Imagine this: the sun is setting over the rolling hills, the bison are settling down for the night, and you’re tucked inside the tipi with a crackling fire in the pit. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy some Bison Billy Sticks from our gift shop or maybe some s’mores.
Speaking of the gift shop, if you haven't stopped in lately, you’re missing out. We’ve got the ranch decked out with all sorts of goodies that would pair perfectly with a night at the tipi firepit.

A Community Hub for Every Guest
One of the things I love most about running a buffalo ranch near me (well, near you!) is seeing the different types of people who visit. We get solo travelers looking for peace, families wanting to show their kids where their food comes from, and couples on a romantic getaway.
Until now, everyone kind of stuck to their own little corner of the ranch. The cabin folks stayed on their porch, and the wagon folks stayed by their fire. But the Nomadic Tipi changes that! It’s our way of saying, "Hey, come on over!" It’s a shared space for all of our guests to enjoy.
I’ve always said that raising bison is nothing like raising cattle (if you don't believe me, read this post!), and I think guest experiences should be the same way. We don't want to be just another hotel or campground. We want to be a place where memories are made around a communal fire.

Coming Spring 2026
We are working hard to have everything set up and ready to go as soon as the ground firms up and the spring flowers start peeking through. It’s been a labor of love getting the site prepped, but seeing it all come together is just... WOW.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a stay but were waiting for a sign, THIS IS IT. Come check out the new calves (they are seriously the cutest things you’ve ever seen), grab some bison meat for the grill, and spend an evening in our new Nomadic Tipi.
I can’t wait to see you all gathered around the fire. It’s going to be a spring to remember!
And hey, while you’re here, make sure you stop by the "Sunset Egglementary" to see the new chicks. Between the tipi, the bison, and the birds, there is never a dull moment at Sunset Hills.

Ready to Visit?
We’re already seeing dates fill up for the spring and summer season. If you want to experience the "unplugged" life for yourself, head over to our booking page and snag your spot. Whether you choose the luxury of the cabin or the adventure of the wagons, the tipi will be waiting for you to come and sit a spell.
See you at the ranch!
